It uses the standard American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery formula, which for each ear is [(avg dB at 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz)-25] X 1.5; bianural hearing handicap is based on a fivefold weight to the better hearing ear. This formula is used in most states for Disability Determination and is also useful when legal issues are involved.
