Arthiefact is a fast-paced matching game that teaches you about the visual language of art in a fun and engaging way!
Are you a student interested in learning more about painting and paintings?
Are you a teacher or educator trying to find some new educational tools to aid you in your work with young people?
Are you a museum curator looking to advertise your beautiful collections and reach out to a younger audience?
Or maybe you’re just very passionate about art and love going to museums on your spare time?
Then Arthiefact might just be the game for you!
You can play it solo, to sharpen your reflexes and knowledge, or you can challenge your friends in multiplayer mode and find out who’s the best art-savvy burglar in town.
How does it work?
Your very demanding boss sent you and a bunch of your “colleagues” on a late-night museum heist, to steal some new paintings for his private collection. But he won’t be satisfied with just any painting, oh no!
He gave you specific instructions you must follow, and time is of the essence: do you know enough about art to steal everything you need before it’s too late?
To appease your boss and win the paintings, you must match all the clues you’ll be given with the paintings on show: the faster you are, the better your chances, but be careful! Too many mistakes, and you’ll be cut off…
You’ll be dealt an initial hand of five clue cards and you’ll be shown one painting at a time. On each clue card you will see one or two symbols depicting common characteristics of paintings (e.g. portrait, religious scene, landscape etc.). Drag one of your clue cards on a matching painting to steal it, and try to get rid of all your clue cards as fast as possible to win.
Behind the game
Arthiefact was originally created by Ivan Čolić, Giulia Degortes Caivano and Victoria Paeva as a board game in 2017, within an Erasmus+ funded project called “EduGaming” which aimed at teaching youth workers how to design educational board games. Arthiefact was very well received and it was presented at the Italian Tool Fair 2017 and at the International Tool Fair of the same year in Bulgaria, and it’s still being used as an educational tool by youth workers and educators all around Europe.
We love the board game dearly, but we wanted to make it even more accessible and we wished for it to be an endlessly expansible resource, so we decided to turn to technology and app our game.
With this digital version, which is completely free to download, museums, foundations and art collectors who’d like to give more visibility to their collections will also be able to contribute to the game by adding new “art packages” to the database.
The basic game comes with a starter pack of “European masterpieces”, which the original board game is based on, and an additional set of “Sardinian painters”.
Whenever a new package is available for download, you will be notified through the “Manage your art” section in the app.
At the moment, the game is available only in English, but we’re working on the Italian translation.
This app is still being tested: please, report any bugs or glitches you may find and, if you’d like, give us some feedback and suggestions on how to make the game better. Thank you!
