Astawq is a mobile app that allows users to quickly find a rental house or roommates. It also lists Ethiopian services and providers such as baby sitters, hair stylists, tax professionals, lawyers, cafes, restaurants, photographers, movers, travel agents, Ethiopian DJs and online merchandise sellers.
Finding a house to rent for a sizable, newer Ethiopian diaspora community is challenging. For most, it takes a while to learn the language of the hosting nation, find sustainable jobs, and build credit to establish themselves before finding rental properties. During such difficult time, most will look into monthly newspapers to find their next rental home or roommates. Others regularly check advertisements on local notice boards of convenience stores, cafes and restaurants in which a good majority of them are outdated.
Astawq is built to fill this gap and provide a fresh listing of rental properties and services. Each listing in Astawq has a date stamp that show the posted date of the ad together with the contact information of the property owner or the person who seeks a roommate.
Astawq's service is not limited to Ethiopian diaspora residing in the United States, Canada and Europe. Users in Ethiopia’s major metropolitan cities like Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Bahir Dar, Jimma, Gondar, Dese, Mekelle, Hawasa, Nekemte, Adama (Debre-Zeit) and Nazreth (Bishoftu) will also find it useful due to urbanization and population explosions that is outpacing housing infrastructure projects such as condominiums and apartments.
The app also helps eliminate the expenses Ethiopian small businesses and service providers incur to market themselves. It fosters quick findability in an easy to use listing based on category, location and search functionalities built within the app. The App is also created having local tradition in mind and we will make regular updates to add more features and list of service providers as we see fit.

Listing your product or service in Astawq is easy. You will have to register first with your email account and create an account by providing username and password. Once you created your account, you can post any ad using the available category. If you do not see the name of the service you are planning to provide, please reach out to us using the contact us section so we can create a category for you. You can also use “Other Services” as a category if you do not want to reach out to us. You can modify any posts you made using your own account. You can de-list your ad once you felt you do not need to list your service anymore using the provided dashboard.
