Welcome to the strange city of Arithma, where you have arrived in search of your lost sibling. You need help finding them, but who can help you? The inhabitants of Arithma, known as the Arithmen, are very helpful (that is, when they’re not playing paintball). The mayor of Arithma can be too… but you have to find him first and that is not always easy. He goes into hiding at the first sign of trouble.
It turns out, the Arithmen need your help too. The only ones who know how to do math in Arithma, called the Xperts, have completely vanished! Could this be connected to the disappearance of your sibling? And how will the city of Arithma function without anyone knowing math?
The Math
ProblemScape doubles as a problem-based learning course that puts a spotlight on applications of algebra to make math more relevant. The multimodal learning content is deeply rooted in research and designed to bring about robust learning that is retained over time, can transfer, and prepare for future learning.
ProblemScape for 6th grade algebra follows along with the "Expressions & Equations" strand of the Common Core State Standards for 6th grade, but can be used by anyone wanting to learn introductory Algebra. There are 8 chapters or levels in the game with each chapter focusing on just one or two concepts. The game is meant to be played sequentially from chapter 1. The current release has only the first chapter, but we will be adding the remaining chapters over the following weeks. Players can follow a pacing guide developed by RoundEd learning to maximize learning, or play through the game at their own pace. The pacing guide can be accessed at the RoundEd Learning website after signing up to create player accounts.
