******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************
Bachata music is a distinct Latin-American music genre that has been developed African descendants who lived in the Dominican Republic during the initial part of the 20th century. It was a type of music that blended pan-Latin American bolero with other classic Latin-Caribbean rhythms and unique African elements. Typical instruments used in Bachata music are Requinto/Bachata guitar, electric bass guitar, guira (which replaced maracas), and bongo drums. The change from maracas to guira in the 1980s has made Bachata music more dance oriented.
For the most part of its history, Bachata music has been maligned by a majority of the Dominican elite and attributed to rural retardation and delinquency. In fact, Bachata music has been deemed too crude and vulgar to break into the mainstream music scene. However, Bachata music instrumentation moved from acoustic guitar to electric steel string, and this change helped propagate the music and make it popular. Currently, Bachata music receives the same popularity in various Latin American dancehalls like merengue and salsa.
Bachata reached widespread popularity and commercial success in the 1990s, but it entered a whole new level in the 21st century when Aventura revolutionized the genre by incorporating more R&B and hip hop sounds into Bachata music.
