Hanja are borrowed Chinese characters that use Korean pronunciation. For example, 입구 (entrance) can be written in Hanja as 入口 where 入 means ‘to enter’ and 口 means ‘opening.’
Hanja are to Korean as Latin is to English:
Korean learners can be confused when encountering new words such as 차 (cha), which can be defined as ‘car’ or ‘tea.’ However, if you know the Hanja for that word, then you can easily figure it out. For example, 차, means ‘car’ when using the Hanja 車 but ‘tea’ when using the Hanja 茶 (pinyin: cha2).
