Summer Stress is an important cause of cattle distress especially in dairy herds, resulting in significantly decreased milk production, reduced growth performances, and negative impact on reproduction. Generally, animals maintain their body temperature at normal ranges even at lower or higher environmental temperatures through thermoregulatory mechanisms. However, at extreme environmental temperatures and humidity, the thermoregulatory mechanisms fail to dissipate excessive heat through normal processes like sweating and panting, thus thermo-stressed animals elevate their body-core temperature to higher levels. This phenomenon is known as hyperthermia.
Hyperthermia leads to increased pulse rate, peripheral blood flow, and water intake with reduced feed intake, production, and reproductive efficiency in affected animals.
The upper critical temperature for Bos taurus ranges from 24° to 26°C, while for Bos indicus is 33°C.
