Chhattisgarh, the 10th largest state in India, residing in the central part of the country is known to have a population of 28 million. The state was formed on 1 November 2000 by partitioning from Madhya Pradesh. Currently the state comprises of 27 districts. From a long time, the state has been bounded by high rates of Neonatal and Infant mortality (IMR of 41, SRS 2016) vis-a-vis to the rest of the country (MMR- 137, SRS 2016). In order to improve the condition of infant care delivery in the state, Ekam Foundation, a not for profit organization collaborated with the UNICEF, Chhattisgarh along with National Health Mission and the Directorate of Health Services (Chhattisgarh) in December 2015 for the project of Special Newborn Care Units (SNCU) up- gradation. The comprehensive approach focuses of 3 areas:
Timely equipment maintenance;
Recruitment and training of nurses & data entry operators in SNCUs;
Microbial surveillance and training.
SNCUs are a neonatal unit in the vicinity of the labor room which provides special care (all care except assisted ventilation and major surgery) for sick newborns. SNCUs are established at the district hospital level. These units cater to both inborn and out born sick neonates. At present 13 SNCUs are functional across 12 districts (Raipur, Durg, Dhamtari, Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon, Ambikapur, Jagdalpur, Koriya, Korba, Raigarh, Mahasamund and Kawardha) providing 24/7 care delivery to the infants.
