OpenTrail is an OpenStreetMap-based walking app for England and Wales, highlighting public rights of way and other paths which have public access and including contours from Ordnance Survey OpenData.
As well as viewing the maps, OpenTrail can be used to share footpath problems, path directions and places of interest with other users. If you're out walking and you come across a footpath blockage, aggressive cattle, a muddy path or just a place where the footpath is indistinct and you want to share directions with other users, you can record this in the app. These notes are uploaded to the Freemap (http://www.free-map.org.uk; OpenStreetMap-based countryside mapping) website, developed by the app's author, and can be viewed online by other users. OpenTrail users can also download notes contributed by others.
Mapping data is also downloaded from Freemap, which contains a simplified copy of OpenStreetMap data for the UK.
OpenTrail can also be used to record walking routes. If you have a favourite route, simply record it, adding notes as you go, and upload it to Freemap - once again, your walking route will be visible on Freemap and can be downloaded by other users in the app to "play" in the field.
OpenTrail will alert you when you reach a note contributed by other users, such as helpful directions to guide you if you get lost!
To prevent spam, uploaded notes and walking routes will need to be approved by administrators first. This should normally be done within 24 hours.
There are occasional, non-serious rendering artefacts - for example some lakes do not show up properly due to database issues (rather than the app itself); some aspects of the OpenStreetMap data model are not currently supported by the Freemap database.
