Do you like to record things you see or hear while you're walking outdoors, or even in a museum? NatureNotes provides an easy way to record your experiences.
You start a walk by creating then activating a new walk record. Once the walk is activated, you're prompted to create an "observation." An observation is meant to represent a coherent set of items (text, photographs, audio recordings) relating to a single topic at a single location at a single point in time. For example, if you see a flower, you tap "new observation" then take one or more pictures, and perhaps enter an ID if you know what it is.
If you then hear a bird signing, you tap "new observation" again, take notes, and perhaps record the song. Taking a photo of the bird may be difficult with an iPhone, but if you or someone else gets a shot with another camera, then you can later send the picture to your iPhone and load it into the appropriate observation in NatureNotes.
Every item you record will be date stamped and geo-tagged so that you know exactly when and where you made the observation.
After the walk is finished, you can edit the observations to create a slideshow that you want to show others. You can show the slideshow on your device, or send it as an email to your friends. You have the option of creating a Web folder that can be uploaded to share the slideshow with a larger audience. By cabling your device to a computer, you can transfer slideshow formats that are too large to email, including sharing entire walk records with other users.
If you want to upload data to a natural history site, you can email raw data to yourself for appropriate reformatting in a spreadsheet program.
The intent of NatureNotes is to make a walk more informative and more fun. Reviewing what you saw or learned and sharing with others can make one's experience more enjoyable and meaningful.
