Over 70 million people speak the Persian language. Persian also known as Farsi is of the Indo-European language. It is spoken and used officially in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It is written in Iran and Afghanistan with the Persian alphabet, a derivation of the Arabic script, and in Tajikistan with the Tajik alphabet, a derivation of Cyrillic.

波斯語，中文也稱波斯文，屬於印歐語系印度-伊朗語族伊朗語支，是一種形成於8至9世紀間的文學語言。是今天伊朗的官方語言，作為其分支的達利語和塔吉克語分別是阿富汗和塔吉克斯坦的官方語言。
由於歷史與宗教的原因，現代波斯語中，有近60％的詞彙來自屬於閃含語系的阿拉伯語。現代伊朗波斯語和阿富汗波斯語都是用一種阿拉伯字母的變體為此書寫符號，其中用到一些在阿拉伯文中沒有的最佳以及字母。
