For EFL Students

Often, Asian students study English for many years, yet cannot understand what people are saying and people cannot understand them. The problem is that in Asia, English is often taught as a written language. Students are seldom tested on listening comprehension, pronunciation, or fluency. Spelling is rote memorization. Students pass tests, and quickly forget.

SWR English supplies the missing link between written and spoken English. While greatly beneficial to auditory learners who have struggled with the visual nature of reading, it is appropriate for all learning styles. Any K-12 English as a Second Language (ESL) or English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student can use it.

English Phonics and Chinese Pinyin

Students confuse Romanized Chinese for English because the alphabet characters are alike. In Chinese, pinyin is a tool to help learners pronounce Chinese words correctly. Phonemes are the basic unit in English spelling. The rules of spelling are different from pinyin, and students suffer from the confusion.

Why Cursive?

Cursive does not look like the Chinese phonetic system. No other programs teach Chinese students to differentiate between English spelling and pinyin.

It is developmentally appropriate for young children to learn cursive first. Cursive helps young children to develop eye-hand coordination. SWR English uses a clock to orient the strokes of each character. This enhances a child’s spatial and directional development. Cursive curbs dyslexia by establishing the left-right orientation of English.

Multi-Sensory Learning

SWR English is multi-sensory. Students hear, speak, write, and see their way into writing and reading. The program develops multiple intelligences with project-based assessment. Students are able to use their strengths to strengthen their weaknesses.

The Scientific Approach to English Learning

SWR English is a complete language arts program with a strong phonics foundation. It is built from the 70 basic phonograms identified by Dr. Henry Orton in the 1920’s and the 29 spelling rules developed by Romalda Spalding in the 1950’s.

SWR English brings to light the missing link between written and spoken English—phonemic awareness. This is a life-saver to students who have failed or struggled to learn with inconsistent and incomplete phonics rules.

SWR English provides explicit instruction, modeling, and practice to the point of automaticity—blending phonemes. Not only does this refine pronunciation, it also accelerates reading and understanding.

Word analysis develops reasoning, logic, and critical thinking ability. It trains listening first, increasing attention span. It systematically trains academic language.

In Chinese, pictorial characters tell the meaning of a word, along with the root and origin of the word. The curriculum covers derivatives and Greek & Latin roots in English for the same purpose.

It uses additive bilingualism, the most effective method for ESL and EFL learners, and is modeled after natural language acquisition.

Effects

JCKids(圖6)-速報App

It is excellent to use with beginning readers, as an elementary spelling program, or with remedial students. Students with visual difficulties and dyslexia succeed. Gifted students apply their studies to more advanced vocabulary. Any K-12 English as a Second Language (ESL) or English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student can use it. Used properly, the curriculum improves the reading scores of most children.
