This app calculates the Flesch Reading Ease Score (FRES), the Flesch-Kincaid (F-K) Grade Level, the Gunning Fog Index, Dale-Chall Score, Dale-Chall Adjusted Score, SMOG grade, FORCAST score, FORCAST reading age, ARI score, Coleman-Liau index, Linsear Write, and LIX scores.
These readability tests are designed to indicate comprehension difficulty when reading a passage of contemporary English. The LIX test is useful for measuring the readability of any language!
In the FRES test, higher scores indicates material that is easier to read; lower numbers mark passages that are more difficult to read. The FRES ranges from 0 to 100. A score of 90.0-100.0 is easily understood by an average 11-year-old student. Score of 60.0-70.0 is easily understood by 13- to 15-year-old students. Score of 0.0-30.0 is best understood by university graduates.
The F-K Grade Level Score, used extensively in the field of education, presents a score as a U.S. grade level. It is used extensively in the field of education.
The Gunning Fog index is commonly used to confirm that text can be read easily by the intended audience. It estimates the years of formal education needed to understand the text on a first reading.
The New Dale-Chall formula is designed for 4th grade and above. Unlike other tests, it keeps track of 'hard' words that do not appear on a list of common words familiar to most 4th-grade students.
The SMOG grade also estimates the years of education needed to understand a piece of writing. It is an acronym derived from Simple Measure of Gobbledygook.
The FORCAST formula, unlike other tests, only uses vocabulary elements, making it useful for texts without complete sentences.
The Automated Readability Index (ARI) score also provides an approximate representation of the US grade level needed to comprehend a given text.
The Coleman-Liau Index relies on characters instead of syllables per word.
The Linsear Write formula, developed by the US Air Force, outputs a score corresponding to US grade level.
LIX is a readability measure that can be used for foreign texts.
This app allows you to easily send the score to another app. Other apps may also easily send blocks of texts to this app for analysis.
