The purpose of this APP is to assist the military officers and staffs of all arms and services in understanding the process of Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield/Battlespace (IPB). It describes IPB, its use in directing the intelligence effort, and its role in driving the staff’s planning for contingency or combat operations. It prescribes the procedures followed in performing IPB and illustrates the application of IPB in various situations.
IPB is a systematic process which maximized the use of graphic and templating. However, the system also incorporates basic intelligence analysis such as intelligence appreciation, forecasting and estimates. IPB predicts enemy intentions, movements, areas of maneuver and other activities and confirm the events through surveillance.
IPB as tool for Battle. The IPB system is an important tool in battle. It can be used to predict and deceive the enemy. It is often said that 50% of the battle is won in intelligence. Those who obtain more information on the opponents will seize the initiative in battle and able to create situations which force the opponent to react.
The products of IPB process at any stage are useful of all arm and services that are involved in the operations. As a summary, the products of IPB process at the various stages are useful to:
• The Air Forces, who requires the doctrinal templates, the Situation Overlay, Event Overlay and Target Overlays for surveillance and striking roles.
• The Navy in amphibious operations, who requires the products of analysis of beaches doctrinal templates, Situation Overlays, Event Overlay and Target Overlays.
• The main Army fighting units, to assist them in maneuvering, communicating and shooting at their targets in the battlefield.
• The intelligence staff and unit in improving their surveillance plan and collection efforts.
• The operational staff, as inputs to tactical appreciations, annex to appreciation orders and instructions.
• The other intelligence agencies, as basis for Operational Security Plan, Psywar Plan and Electronic Warfare Plans.
