The Governor’s Hurricane Conference® (GHC) is the nation’s largest, most comprehensive and most affordable hurricane conference. The GHC began in 1987 as a joint effort sponsored by the Florida Emergency Preparedness Association, the Florida Division of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross. In 2006, the conference proudly welcomed the National Weather Service as its fourth sponsoring agency. The conference was established in order to provide a vehicle to present lessons learned and other important information about hurricanes to public and private officials, especially emergency management professionals and those involved in hurricane planning, response and recovery at all levels of government, private business and non-governmental organizations. A primary goal of the founders was to provide a conference that was affordable and meaningful for even the smallest communities and organizations that prepare for, respond to and recover from a tropical event. This goal is still relevant today.
From its modest beginnings as a three-day conference with 389 attendees the first year, the GHC has grown to become the largest hurricane conference in the United States, with up to 4,000 participants. The now six-day event includes up to four days of training with an additional two days of workshops, a general session and a two-day Exhibit Hall which showcases the latest in hurricane-related products and services.
