Function of “9S-Whole Brain Development”
9S helps children to establish a better foundation for future development and facilitate an all-round development. It can also build up a better Parent-Child relationship.
Introduction of “9S-Whole Brain Development”
The concept of whole brain development by 9 senses and 9 strategies has been developed by Mr. Fritz Pang and Ms. Irene Tsang, Registered Educational Psychologist and Service Director of New Horizons Development Centre respectively since 2005. It is the symbol of holistic development of our brain function that is a registered trademark in Hong Kong and China.
In most learning activities, we emphasize listening by ear, speaking by mouth, reading by eye and writing by hand. All these strategies are working through brain as the nodal position.
In last century, all the learning activities or daily living were assumed to rely on five senses, such as eye, ear, mouth, nose and body. With the advancement of technology in understanding brain functioning, some experts propose the concepts of seven senses of human beings in receiving or processing stimulus from external environment. Sensory Integration is the neurological processes that organize sensation from one’s own body and the environment and makes it possible to use the body effectively within the environment.
Sensory processing is the brain receiving, interpreting, and organizing input from all of the active senses at given moment. The seven senses are:
1. Sight or vision: the capability of the eyes to focus and detect images of visible light and generate electrical nerve impulses for varying colors, hues, and brightness.
2. Smell or olfaction: our ability to detect scent – chemical, odour molecules in the air. Odour molecules possess a variety of features and, thus excite specific receptors more or less strongly. This combination of excitement is interpreted by the brain to perceive smell.
3. Taste or gestation: the capability to detect the taste of substances. Human receive tastes through sensory organs called taste buds concentrated on the upper surface of the tongue.
4. Hearing or auditory: the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations, changes in the pressure of the surrounding medium through time, through an organ such as the ear.
5. Touch or somatosensory: perception resulting from activation of neural receptors, generally in the skin including hair follicles and a variety of pressure receptors respond to variations in pressure.
6. Vestibular system: explains the perception of our body in relation to gravity, movement and balance. The vestibular system measures acceleration, g-force, body movements and head position.
7. Proprioception: the senses of the relative position of neighboring parts of the body and strength of effort being employed in movement. It lets us know exactly where our body parts are, how we are positioned in space and to plan our movements.
According to our practical experiences and professional knowledge, there are at least two more senses that should be included as important senses. Heart or feeling represents the capacity of regulating our psychological status and feelings. It is highly related to one’s emotions or personality. Brain or cognitive function is acting as the general of all the senses, which is concerning the memory, comprehension and application of different senses in an appropriate way. Therefore, we propose to have 9 senses in our learning or daily living. The following diagram represents all the 9 senses as receiving channels. On the other hand, from educators’ point of view, all these senses could also be used as strategies in teaching and learning.
