WHY IS CARE TO TRANSLATE NEEDED?
Language barriers can have serious CONSEQUENCES, and that's why our digital healthcare translator is needed.
Risks of MISDIAGNOSIS and maltreatment increase when language barriers exist between the patient and the healthcare personnel.
Lack of, or incorrect, communication can lead to COMPLICATIONS for the patient.
Patients with limited language proficiency usually STAY LONGER in the emergency room (approx. 30 minutes), and stay 4 days longer in hospitals than the average patient.
Patients with limited language proficiency have a 60% HIGHER TENDENCY to seek emergency care than the average patient. They are at a 50% higher risk of being hospitalized, and are 20% more likely to seek care again within 72 hours after discharge.
In addition, healthcare professionals are likely to take MORE SAMPLES and do more research on patients who do not master the language.
All these factors INCREASE COSTS for healthcare providers.

Care to Translate (then ‘Språk i vården’) was founded as a non-profit by medical students from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden in the fall of 2015. Today, it has become one of the most used translation tools in the Swedish healthcare sector, spreading mainly by word-of-mouth in communities of healthcare professionals.
However, the issue that ‘Språk i vården’ was addressing affected, and continues to affect, people all over the world. To be able to work on it with full devotion, the company Care to Translate AB was founded in 2018. The company has since received grants from the Swedish innovation authority Vinnova and and has graduated from Sweden's number one incubator program Sting Accelerate.
