Shri Hanuman Chalisa is a hindi poem written by Mahakavi Goswami Tulsidas in the sixteenth century in praise of Lord Hanuman. Tulsidas wrote the 40 chaupais (chalisa) on Hanuman when he was imprisoned by Akbar. It is said that on 40th day the entire Fatehpur Sikri was surrounded by giant monkeys to rescue tulsidas by attacking the guards.
The poem is extremely simple and rhythmic which makes it more popular. The poem baiscally praises Lord Hanuman’s quality, strength, courage, wisdom, celibacy, devotion to Rama and kindness and recounts the Lord’s great deeds.
