Eponymous to our name, My People’s Radio is the voice and sound of the contemporary Igbo populace whose respect for the vastness and depth of the distinct Igbo Culture resonates in their approach to everyday issues.
Igboland (Standard Igbo: Àlà Ị̀gbò), also known as Southeastern Nigeria, is the indigenous homeland of the Igbo people. It is a non-governmental cultural and common linguistic region in southern Nigeria. Geographically, it is divided by the lower Niger River into two unequal sections – an eastern (which is the larger of the two) and a western section. It is characterized by the diverse Igbo culture and the equally diverse Igbo language. As remarked, “in Igbo[land] each person hails, as a sailor would say, from the particular district where he was born, but when away from home all are Igbos. And yet considerable differences exist between different parts of this extensive country, and the dialects spoken also vary greatly”.
As the region’s leading radio station directly serving this community, and the South East’s most popular mass media vehicle, my People’s Radio provides an established platform from which retailers and service companies can, at minimal cost, bring products and services to the attention of the region’s urban, peri-urban and rural communities.
Comprising a culturally eclectic population, ranging from community members to small business entrepreneurs, local government representatives and farm dwellers, the South Eastern region of Nigeria provides us with a listener size spanning 20 -30 million people.
To ensure balanced content over its 7-day 24-hour broadcast schedule, My People’s Radio engages in participative dialogue with community leaders and residents alike; provides a wide range of musical entertainment; a popular daily magazine programme focusing on the family, health and women’s issues; youth-participation forums; educational, community health, and cultural programmes; sports coverage, and the opportunity for all to interact on air with current issues affecting themselves, their families and communities towards development and growth.
We also on a regular basis produce PSA’s (public service announcements) for various government departments, private companies, independent groups, community forums and notable individuals.
Beyond the fact that we chronicle and communicate the very essence of our Igbo culture with issues spanning the redness of our blood to the hue in our caps, we aim at consistently celebrating and engaging our illustrious sons and daughters in the spirit of goodwill, growth and the general progress of the Igbo race.
