Bank Employees movement in India was born of the womb of freedom struggle and uprising against increasing atrocities & oppressions on working class by the British Empire as well as Capital – foreign & domestic both after two successive world wars. They were being paid paltry wages with no regulated service conditions at all. It was a rule of hire and fire. Bank employees were groaning but did not have the requisite courage to form unions. They saw the workers in the factories fighting and making some progress in terms of wages and betterment in service conditions. Bank employees got immense courage here & there from Navy Mutiny of 1946 & wide spread strike actions by various sectors spreading from Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Indore, Kanpur, Surat, Agra etc like Industrial Centres and started to organise themselves into unions in a sporadic way. This way, U.P. Bank Employees Union (UPBEU) came into existence followed by All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), the oldest and largest national Trade Union of bank employees in India was founded in 1946 on the 20th of April.
we have greater challenges before us. Attacks on the working class and Public Sector are mounting. We have not only to save public sector but also to save our jobs, our unity and our service conditions. We have to ensure united movement of employees of Union Bank of India as the unions having very little membership can’t serve any constructive purpose. Better service conditions may be achieved only with better membership and so, it is paramount duty of all our members to keep on mobilizing membership at their respective branches and also spreading the good work done by UBSAUP, AIUBEA & AIBEA.
