Nilgiri tahr is the only species of Caprinae ungulate that is found south of the Himalayas. Eleven other species of Indian Caprinae ungulates are confined to the Himalayan biogeographical zones. The Nilgiri tahr presently occurs patchily over a short 400 km stretch of Southern Western Ghats. It is a mere 5 percent of the entire Western Ghats région.
