your plastic bottles can be recycled, from mouthwash to salad dressing – so put them all in your recycling bin! In most boroughs, you can recycle all your plastic bottles, tubs and pots, and their tops and lids too.
It’s more than just newspapers you can recycle as well. You can recycle your envelopes, wrapping paper, birthday cards and even phone books. All types of cardboard can also be recycled, even toilet roll tubes and drinks cartons.
Plastic bottles in particular are easy to recycle. They’re manufactured using one of two methods, which are easy to detect using infrared technology. They should be empty but don’t require washing, and there’s no issue with regards to bottle tops, or colour, unlike with glass. So you can make a huge difference to the environment, just by separating out your plastic bottles.
You’ll want to check with your local program whether to keep caps on the bottles, or whether caps are accepted at all. Some programs want the cap on to prevent loose caps from falling out during transportation. Others want the cap off to ensure the bottle is empty and because their recycling machinery may be damaged when trying to crush a capped bottle. You should be OK leaving the label on the bottle, but it’s unlikely to be recycled since it’s a low-grade quality of paper or plastic.
It’s never a bad idea to squash those bottles before throwing them away. Not only will you fit more recycling in your bins, but it’s a good work out too! Tip: screw on the lid once your bottles are squished and they’ll stay that way. check with local authorities that they recycle the lids and make sure you drain all the contents of the bottles before recycling.
