Fossils Viewer is an augmented reality android application developed by Michael Bakogiannis and submitted as the graduation theses for the degree of BSc in Computer Science at University of Ioannina.
The purpose of this application is to help the user examine 3D objects with his smartphone using his gestures and to display these objects in the real 3D world. To be more specific, the user can choose to examine a fossil among a list of objects, which are 3D recreations of real fossils collected from the Perama Cave in Ioannina, Greece. The user can choose a fossil at a time and he can move it around in 3D space in order to examine it. The user can also annotate over the object in order to add comments in places of interest. After the addition of a comment, the user can display it by tapping over the pin that has just added. At this point the application offers convenience to the user, because the comments are displayed on the screen (2D world), for easier reading, and the user can still move the object around the 3D world.
In order the user to examine the object properly, the application can receive three kinds of gestures. With the movement of one finger the user can move the object. Two fingers resize the object and three fingers rotate the object. For the addition of comments, the user can perform a long-click and can display it afterwords with a simple click.
With a press of a button, the application opens the camera and tries to place the selected object over an image pattern. This is accomplished by the use of the AndAR library.
