The Naturalist Application Team serves the students and faculty of the University of California, Merced, as well as nature enthusiasts who are interested in the Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve (VPGR),community partner. The Naturalist Application Team is developing a mobile application database of different grassland species. The goal of the VPGR is to educate a diverse range of visitors on environmental stewardship and conservation of natural lands throughout the San Joaquin Valley. The Naturalist App will help foster awareness of the vernal pools by highlighting the uniqueness of the VPGR ecosystem and showcasing its various species. The resulting mobile database will benefit visitors of the reserve as visitors familiarize themselves with the VPGR using the application and channel a sense of environmental awareness.
Our stakeholders include researchers, visitors to the VPGR, and naturalists within and beyond the Merced community. Monique Kolster, the Reserve Director, along with the VPGR Advisory Board, are concerned with promoting popular and scientific exploration of the reserve, and as such depend on a complete reference guide to catalog flora, fauna, and geomorphology. UC Merced Environmental Engineers and Researchers rely on complete, up-to-date, and geotagged information about the VPGR. The UC Merced Planning Department, Facilities Management, and technical advisers require such information to make informed decisions about maintenance and expansion of the campus, especially regarding environmental mitigation on the land. Other parties that may benefit from the Naturalist App include visiting research teams from other universities, the Sierra Nevada Research Institute, the Merritt Writing Program's environmental writing classes, the California Naturalists Program, the Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory, and the Center for Climate Communication.
