Research on revision strategies
(Improving Students΄ Learning with Effective Learning Techniques, John Dunlosky, 2013)
has revealed that some of the most commonly used preparation techniques are in fact, the least effective. The culprits include highlighting, re-reading and revising. Yet, far too often, we see students impulsively reach for their trusted Faber-Castell fluorescent highlighter and proceed to laboriously re-color their entire textbook.

In one of the most comprehensive studies on mock exams
(Test-Enhanced Learning, Henry L. Roediger, III, and Jeffrey D. Karpicke, 2006)
researchers split students into two groups and found that the group that did a practice test fared considerably better in the final exam than their counterparts who did not partake in the mock exam and had instead spent the entire time revising the subject matter. This was attributed to the fact that writing mock exams helps solidify and retain information (known as the testing effect). While on the other hand, rote memorization negatively impacts critical thinking and application skills.
A practice paper, when composed right, has numerous benefits! It gives students a first-hand experience of the pressure of exam conditions, it bolsters the improvement of knowledge in limited time, it helps students assess themselves and scope out areas of improvement, it familiarizes a student with the paper structure and weight, helps students cut through the clutter and get to the meat of subject, and fosters continuous, quantifiable improvement.
