As more and more young people are coming to terms with gender identity and transitioning, there is a need for resources that can encourage conversation and understanding in a safe and open environment. Dallas Children’s Theater is pleased to add this topic to its series of internationally-recognized teen issue plays. Andi is a transgender teen entering his first day of school identifying as a male. Former classmates recall his last name when they hear it, but there is something different about Andi that keeps the dots from connecting clearly in their minds. Soon his new teachers, classmates, and his classmates’ parents will figure it out. How will they react? With aggression? With compassion? With confusion? Inspired by one teen’s journey, ANDI BOI is told with a sensitivity towards Andi and uses wit, heart, and warmth to help audiences find their way to greater compassion and awareness. Post-show conversations with subject matter resources will follow every performance.

Inspired by one teen’s journey, this play and this experience is not attempting to represent the spectrum of scenarios that are going on in the transgender community, but rather to pave a way to start conversation and foster awareness and understanding.

Central to the play is a game that Andi is particularly good at. His ability to play this game gains interest from a group of kids at his new school which is great because Andi wants nothing more than to have new friends as he embarks on his new life.

While this app only gives you a chance to see the game characters as Andi and his friends do, it might be helpful for you to know how the game is set up in the play.

The goal in Biddybeasts is to collect as many monsters as you can, then morph them into SuperMegaBeasts through cocooning. Biddybeasts are all individual monsters with individual traits.

All Biddybeasts fall into one of five categories, Heart, Soul, Brain, Body and Sensory.

Tripleflip - A Soul Monster – It chooses good or evil.

Parsonfyre- A Body Monster – Displays physical super powers. Breathes fire.

Whip Whistle - Heart. Blows kisses of love to heal battle wounds.

Goobertube - Sensory. All senses are heightened.

Cat Attack - Brain. Can read minds.

Super Mega - All of them.

In the play, the students use the app to find NESTS of Biddybeasts all over the place.

Each monster is worth a certain amount of golden nuggets. When you find the nests, you capture the monsters. When you have collected one monster from each of the five categories, you wrap them up in a cocoon and save them. Inside the cocoon, the monsters mutate and grow together and become a bigger monster. They grow. They change. They morph. But at the core, they are what they were. And they become what they should be, which is really special. When you have fifty cocoons – I know that sounds like A LOT – you can use your gold to unleash the beast. The Super Mega Beast. So. Cool. Then you start over. And you build an army. And rule the land.

The idea of the game and the play is to celebrate how things can change. How they become more of what they are. In the fictional game, there are SO MANY Biddys to start with, No two the same! Which is the best part. Because, wouldn’t it be a boring world if all the monsters were the same?
