Thomas Coke (1747 - 1814) was the first Methodist Bishop and is known as the Father of Methodist missionary work.
He was born in Wales and his father was well known business man. Coke was only 5'1" tall, however he had a strong personality. He became a close associate of John Wesley and he study law at Jesus College, Oxford.
After graduating he returned to his hometown he served as Mayor in 1772. He was often abroad on missionary journeys both in the US and France and he died aboard a ship traveling to India. He was described at his death as, "a gentleman, a scholar, a bishop to us; and as a minister of Christ, in zeal, in labors, in services, the greatest man in the last century."
