The Countermark iOS App purpose is to read Wessex Technology’s Countermark marking system. The app utilises the iPhone camera, processing the live view, searching for a Countermark. Once a potential Countermark has been detected the image of the Countermark is sent up to Wessex’s Countermark server for further processing and decode. If the decode is successful then the Countermark Server will return a temporary link to the data (image, pdf, or url) that is associated with the detected Countermark. If the server is unable to decode the Countermark image, or the user is not authorised to view the Countermark, then an error message is returned to the user.
Some Countermarks are printed in colour inks, or inverted such as a white Countermark on a black background rather than a black Countermark on a white background. To aid detection and decode, the iPhone app includes a number of automatic filters that are designed to pick out specific characteristics of the image.
A Countermark shall be classed as “public” if all users of the Countermark app are able to decode the Countermark and view the content. A Countermark shall be classed as “private” if the Countermark is restricted either to a registered iPhone or by geographical location (GPS will need to be available on the iPhone to read geographical locked Countermarks). A Countermark is also time limited, and therefore once that time has expired the Countermark will no longer be able to be accessed by the user.
The Countermark has the following purpose:
Provide obfuscation – i.e. hide information that unauthorised users are unable to view
Complement – Provide additional information
Counterfeit protection – Identify that an item that has a Countermark is the genuine item
