What is Meliorate?
Meliorate is an intervention app, developed to intervene children with mild and moderate Intellectual Disability (ID) on account of intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviours. This app is culturally flavoured and targets the Pakistan’s population of children with ID specifically. Comprehensive research work was done for developing and validating the positive effects on children by this app. Meliorate supported intervention was implemented on children at special education institutes in Lahore (Pakistan), Ameen Maktab (LHE) and Rising Sun (LHE). Pre and post intervention evaluation’s difference in performance of control and experimental groups showed that Meliorate had an overall positive effect on children’s intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviours.
Motivation
Intellectually Disabled Children (IDC) often face difficulties in social situations, daily routine and self-help tasks due to their poor communication and learning skills. Since Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has facilitated lives of people in almost every area, definitely it has also helped the individuals with disabilities. Similarly the children with ID can also be helped by ICT tools supported interventions, where these interventions can be implemented through some smartphone and tablet based applications.

• Research Work
This app is first of its kind which is developed for children with ID based on proper research work, methods were improvised to analysis the effects produced by this it. Two prominent institutions from Lahore (Pakistan), Ameen Maktab (LHE) and Rising Sun (LHE) collaborated in terms of provision with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Contextual Task Analysis (CTA), sample for pre and post intervention evaluations. SMEs and CTA was the base for the formulation of requirements set for Meliorate I.
• Comprehensive Culturally Tailored App
It is a comprehensive app by nature, i.e. a kind of full fledge package which includes Social Stories and games, targeting the both intellectual functioning and adaptive behavioural areas of children with ID. Social Stories were video modelled and wrapped in beautiful animations covered physical, life and social behavioural skills. Games acted as cognition targeted activities and included jigsaw puzzles, shadow match puzzles, tall short puzzles, shapes colouring and paint therapy. Alphabet tracing was also incorporated as educational activities for two languages Urdu and English.
