The Institute of Science, Mumbai, formerly known as the Royal Institute of Science (RIS) was established in 1920 by the Royal Charter. The Institute is located in the Central Business District of Mumbai opposite Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum. The building is a heritage site, illuminated during night. Since the Institute is at a walkable distance from Churchgate Station and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, it can be reached easily from any corner of Mumbai.

The Institute is managed by the Government of Maharashtra and is affiliated to University of Mumbai. It is a full- fledged premier post-graduate centre for teaching and research in science. From its inception in 1920 till date, the Institute has earned a very high reputation in scientific research and teaching. The theme of research undertaken at the Institute is to seek solutions to the problems besetting mankind and a great quest to venture into techniques leading to path breaking innovations in the frontiers of Science. The Institute undertakes interdisciplinary and multi-institutional research projects sponsored by different funding agencies and industries in various areas. As an academic institution, the Institute has not only succeeded in setting and maintaining high standards of research and teaching, but has also provided an atmosphere congenial for the pursuit of Science. Education is a learning process and research is a process of expansion of ideas, which exist. This is supported in tenets of the motto of the Institute, “It’s good to seek out the causes of things”, which has been followed over the years at the Institute. The Institute has been identified as a Center with Potential for Excellence by UGC. Institute was reaccredited ‘A’ Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2014. Institute received “Dainik Bhaskar National Education leadership Award” in recognition of leadership, development and marketing of the Institute. The Dainik Bhaskar National Education Award recognizes institutions that are innovative, modern and industry related in their curriculum.

The Institute has set its goals and objectives in tune with the aspirations of our students as well as the needs and expectations of the society. We strive to impart quality education to our students and encourage them to participate in various co- and extracurricular activities to bring out the best of their talents so as to enrich their multidimensional personality development in the modern world of 21st century. Over the years, our students have secured top ranks in the University examinations. Ms. Khushbu Jain of the Department of Environmental Science was conferred a gold medal for standing first among all the University students in 2013-14. Two of our students, Ms. Nithya Srinivasan and Ms. Prajakta D. Bhoite have been adjudged best for General Proficiency including Character and Conduct, Excellence in Academic Performance, Extra Curricular Activities and Social Service and awarded "The President of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold medal”, jointly with the University of Mumbai.

The Institute has been Alma Mater to a commanding array of outstanding industrialists and educationists, who have made their name in various walks of life. Distinguished scientists Dr. Homi Bhabha, Wrangler V. V. Narlikar, Dr. B. M. Udgaonkar, Dr. M. G. K. Menon and Dr. Shreeram Abhyankar and educationists Padmabhushan Madhav Gadgil, Shri Madhav Chavan are amongst the alumni of the Institute. Industrialists like Mr. K. H Gharda, Mr. K. J. Somaiya, Mr. D. M. Khatau, Dr. Kiran Karnik (Ex CEO- NASSCOM) are also included amongst the alumni of the Institute. Prof. Ms. Varsha Gaikwad, former Honorable Minister for State, Department of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra was a student of Department of Mathematics for M.Sc. programme during years 1998-2000.
