“Brilliant! The most comprehensive aphasia app that I have ever seen!” Kit Clewley, SLT, Keep Communicating, North Wales
“Cuespeak has become the ‘go to’ app in our team. The contents and design clearly show the developer understands aphasia therapy and what people with aphasia and their therapists want” Laorag Hunter, SLT, NHS Tayside, Scotland
“Hugely impressive… It’s the first time I’ve seen a language therapy app that really makes use of the potential of the technology” Dr. Anna Caute, Division of Language and Communication Science, City University of London
Cuespeak is a professional rehabilitation tool for people with speech, language and cognitive difficulties after stroke or brain injury. Produced in the UK and now used in many NHS hospitals, Cuespeak contains over 2500 images, 1500 videos showing target words being spoken and broken down into syllables and sounds, and more than 8000 spoken prompts.
Cuespeak moves beyond traditional 'picture naming' approaches towards a more dynamic 'question and facilitated answer' format which seeks better to emulate the processing demands of conversation. The 8000+ spoken prompts include questions, spoken feedback on errors and 'closure cues' designed to elicit spoken production of target words and phrases.
Exercises from any of the ten therapy modules can be highly customised to individual needs and combined into a complete bespoke therapy programme which will run automatically at the single press of a button. This enables people even with significant cognitive problems to carry out prolonged, intensive, independent practice to supplement their face-to-face therapy programme.
Exercises cover:
Spoken word retrieval and production
Sentence construction and production
Understanding spoken language
Semantic associations
Phonology
Articulation
Spelling
Reading
An advanced settings menu allows SLTs to tailor exercises for very specific linguistic needs. Target words can be selected according to first and last sounds, number of phonemes (sounds), number of letters, number of syllables, grammatical word class and thematic role. Results capture both accuracy and speed of responses and are displayed over time in graph form.
With the exception of the articulation videos, Cuespeak can run fully without internet connection, making it easy to use on the move.
This version of Cuespeak is aimed at UK users, using British English throughout and with cultural references geared heavily towards the UK. Versions for other cultures are planned.
“This is the best therapy tool I have ever used. The levels, variety, clear pictures and breakdown of material are perfect. I introduced it to my dysphasic client just now and he was beaming with delight. The app both challenged him and gave him material he could do easily. He was delighted to read, select choices and then repeat grammatically correct sentences for the first time in 2 years.” Elizabeth McBarnet, SLT, Lismenary Speech and Language Clinic, N. Ireland.
