******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************
Bossa nova music is a Brazilian music genre that became established and was popularized throughout the 1950s and the 1960s. The phrase “bossa nova” itself means "new trend". Typical instruments used in Bossa nova music are classical guitar, electronic organ, piano, acoustic bass, strings, drums and other percussions. Bossa nova is rhythmically influenced by samba, and this is evident with the emphasis on the second beat in Bossa nova as in samba. Blues also made its mark in Bossa nova, however this influence often goes unnoticed.
The typical lyrical themes of Bossa nova music are love, longing, women, and the best of youth. Bossa nova’s thematic types are broken down into two major ones: the early Bossa nova which began in the latter part of the 1950s, and the one after the Brazilian coup d'état of 1964. The former’s musical lyrics portrayed the easy life experienced by the middle to upper-class Brazilians at that time (while majority of Brazilians comprised the working class). The latter type of Bossa nova depicted more anger and came with lyrics that were more thematically charged and referred to the trials and liberation that the people went through.
