CheSScan is a document scanning utility to help retrieve chess game moves in Portable Game Notation (PGN) format from a chess tournament scoresheet which is written using Standard Algebraic Notation (SAN).
As of current version, following features are supported by the service:
Scoresheet scanning - scans chess tournament scoresheets and predicts closest matching moves recognized by it and provides opportunity to the user to correct misidentified moves.
Writing Game PGN - store scanned and corrected games as PGN on device. (available to premium service subscribers)
Analysis - lets users do analysis of games in the database with a very strong chess engine.
Sharing Games - allows users to share their games PGN via email with fellow chess players or trainers.

After the trial period is over, purchase amount for the originally opted subscription will be applied. Subscriptions will automatically renew unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Purchase will be applied to your iTunes account for renewal within 24 hours before the end of your current period. You can cancel your subscription anytime by going to your iTunes account settings. Any unused portion of your free trial period is dissolved if you cancel your plan.

CheSScan uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) techniques. CheSScan also provides an easy way to correct incorrectly recognized moves by the OCR, since OCR accuracy can vary depending on the handwriting of an individual (and many other factors), using two different visual aids - by moving a chess piece on the chessboard or by choosing the correct move from the popover after tapping on the incorrect move in move collection view. Tool is intended to assist its users in not wasting time in entering moves manually and getting down to more productive task of analyzing one's games.
CheSScan also provides an engine to analyze your game quickly for any blunders, mistakes or inaccuracies that you or your opponent may have committed in your game. To access analysis part you have to first scan, correct and save your game. You can then run analysis on your saved games as and when you like. Your games PGN lives on your device.
CheSScan aims to be able to "scan" with high level of accuracy, all types of handwritings and different layout scoresheets. However, at this point it is not quite there and is limited in following aspects:
- Cannot recognize cursive handwriting. So, your moves letters/characters should be distinctly legible.
- Moves should not be overlapping or obstructed by scoresheet layout. Move characters should not cross over any of the scoresheet layout lines.
- A handwriting that is not legible to humans would most likely be impossible for an OCR to understand. If you fall in this category, quite possibly, tool would not be of much help to you.
- Scoresheet should be as clean as possible, and should not contain unused or crossed out move lines or move boxes.
- A crumpled, marred or unclean scoresheet would be extremely hard for recognizer to work on, and most likely would return without having recognized any moves.
