If you ask any practicing psychiatrist or therapist:
- What is the most common reason why people turn to you? ....
In 100% of cases you will hear the same answer:
- Depression.
Depression is a common illness worldwide affecting more than 300 million people. Depression differs from usual mood fluctuations and short-lived emotional responses to everyday life challenges. Depression may become a serious health condition particularly in case of long-lasting and moderate or severe intensity. It makes the affected person suffer greatly and perform poorly at work, at school and in family. In worst cases depression can lead to suicide. Every year, about 800 000 people commit suicide. Suicide is the second main cause of death among the people aged 15-29.
Despite the availability of known and effective methods of depression treatment, less than half of affected people in the world (in many countries, less than 10%) receive such treatments. Barriers to efficacious treatment include lack of resources, lack of trained health-care providers, and social stigma associated with mental disorders. Another barrier to efficacious treatment is inaccurate assessment. In countries of any income level, depressed people are often incorrectly diagnosed, while other people not having this disorder are too often misdiagnosed and prescribed antidepressants. (WHO)
Half of those who suffer from depression do not seek medical assistance, and only 25-30% of those who are depressed turn to psychiatrists. In some countries, the percentage of those who do not seek medical assistance approaches 90%.
Unipolar depression is the leading cause of disability in the USA among children over 5.
Special studies have shown that 60% of patients who turn to polyclinics have depressive disorders of varying severity. Meanwhile, as a result of diagnoses applying traditional medical methods used in polyclinics, depression is revealed in only 5% of all depressed patients who go there.
Depression is diagnosed in 22-33% of hospitalized patients, in 38% of oncological patients, in 47% of patients with stroke, in 45% of patients with myocardial infarction, and in 39% of those with parkinsonism.
Not so long ago, the peak of depression morbidity occurred at the age between 30 and 40 years, but today the depression has abruptly become "younger" and it often affects people under 25. Among the people born before 1940, the number of those who recovered from depression before the age of 25 is 2.5%. Among those born in 1940-1959, this indicator is already 10%. There is no exact data for later years, but the growth of this trend is maintained.
